Kids to College

For $100 a month a child can be fed, clothed, housed, and educated.  The care of a child’s physical needs can be a long-term commitment.  However, we only ask for one year at time because we know that financial situations can change over time.

We are helping about half of the children through college.  We felt that providing for their higher education would give them a much greater chance to earn a living for themselves.  Their college expenses cost about $100/month per child.  This is in addition to their regular sponsorship.

David and Sony Sagar are the children’s home directors and are doing a fantastic job raising the thirteen kids who live in the home.

Philip Philip lived in a village about six hours away from Bhaktapur.  He was two years old when his mother died in childbirth.  Philip’s father committed suicide after his second wife left him.  Philip was bounced around between relatives until one of them brought him to an orphanage, but it closed six months later.  Philip said he was very frightened and didn’t know what would happen to him.  Someone in his old orphanage brought him to the children’s home when he was eight years old.  Philip had missed so much school, that he had to enroll in Kindergarten.  He eventually caught up, graduated, and is now studying the tourism industry in college.  Philip plays guitar and leads worship in the church.

Raj Raj is Nabin’s older brother.  His dad died when he was very young and his stepfather was an alcoholic who beat the boys.  He ran away from home and got on a bus to Bhaktapur when he was eight years old.  He lived on the streets with other boys and would sneak into weddings and birthday parties to steal food. David found the two brothers playing in a temple and asked them if they wanted a place to stay, food, and to go to school.  Raj ended up going the the children’s home with David that day; he was ten years old.  He said that giving up the glue sniffing was easy, but not being able to come and go as he pleased was the hard part.  He eventually settled down and was able to attend school.  Raj plays bass guitar and helps with the music in church.  He graduated from school in 2013 and is studying the tourism industry in college.

Paul Paul was abandoned by his parents and lived on the streets of his village in Western Nepal.  He would steal for food and ate out of the garbage. Paul would ride busses and sing to the passengers hoping for a few coins. There was a Christian man in his village who tried to care for Paul, but he was not able to because of his work.  This man eventually brought Paul to the children’s home when he was six years old.  Paul told us that he struggled adjusting to life in the home and had a hard time remembering to use the toilet in the bathroom.  David was very patient with Paul, and helped him along.  Paul did well in school, and he will be enrolling in college this year.  He still likes to sing, but he sings in church now.

Jonathan Jonathan is one of the younger kids in the children’s home.  He was six when he came to us.  His father abandoned him and his mother when he was only seven days old.  Mother and son moved to Kathmandu for her to find work.  Jonathan’s mother found a job in a factory for 16 cents a day.  She finally found good work as a maid for 90 cents a day, but she could not take care of Jonathan in the home she was working.  She sent Jonathan to our children’s home to give him the best chance for survival.  Although he misses his mother very much, Jonathan is very happy to be in the children’s home.  His mother does come to visit him as often as she can, and she even attends church with him from time to time.
